Why Art Style Vocabulary Matters for AI Prompts
If you've spent time prompting AI image generators, you've likely noticed that two people can describe the same subject and get dramatically different results. Often the difference comes down to one thing: style vocabulary. The words you use to describe the visual approach — the medium, the movement, the aesthetic — carry an enormous amount of information that shapes everything from color palette to brushwork to composition to emotional register.
This happens because AI models are trained on massive corpora of images paired with captions. Those captions contain the language humans use to describe art. When you use the word "impressionist" in a prompt, the model draws on thousands of images associated with that term — the loose brushwork, the emphasis on light and color over precise form, the characteristic palette of Monet and Renoir. The term is a compressed style definition.
Knowing these terms is like having a shared vocabulary with the model. Instead of describing every visual quality in exhaustive detail — "loose brushstrokes, emphasis on color and light, not precisely realistic, warm palette, visible paint texture" — you can say "impressionist painting" and communicate all of that in two words.
This glossary covers 50 styles across six categories. For each style you'll find: what it is, its key visual characteristics, how to use it in prompts, and which AI models render it particularly well.
How Style Terms Affect Output Differently Across Models
The same style term doesn't produce identical results across all AI models. Each model has its own training data distribution, which shapes how it interprets style vocabulary:
Midjourney has the richest style vocabulary of any current model. It has deep training on art history and contemporary design, and produces highly polished, aesthetically considered outputs for almost every named style. The tradeoff is that Midjourney imposes its own aesthetic sensibility — results often look "Midjourney" even when specifying obscure styles.
Stable Diffusion with community checkpoints often has model-specific style strengths. A checkpoint trained heavily on anime will produce exceptional anime outputs but mediocre oil paintings. Knowing which base model to use is as important as the prompt. Style LoRAs add further specialization.
Flux 1.1 Pro handles photographic and realistic styles exceptionally well, but fine art styles are less consistent. "Impressionist oil painting" in Flux produces a convincing painterly image but may not capture the specific impressionist quality as precisely as Midjourney.
DALL·E 3 handles most common styles reliably and excels at illustration and graphic design styles. Fine art historical styles work well. Very niche or obscure aesthetic movements may produce less accurate outputs than Midjourney.

1. Impressionism
